Free range chickens are not the same as organic chickens. Free range just means that you poultry is allowed to range freely outside and forage naturally. Organic poultry or organic chickens must live and eat organic and naturally – the place you buy you chicken food from must be organically certified and you will need to grow a large portion of the poultry food on the farm where you are raising the chickens.

Chickens will eat almost anything

The chicken farm will need to have chicken houses that allow free range as well. Every aspect of the supply chain will be need to be organic and organically certified – free range does not have to adhere to these criteria. You will still be able to use chicken feeding systems like poultry pan feeders and nipple drinking systems if you are raising many chickens!

Free range chickens and free range poultry can eat commercial chicken feed as long as it is organic (the free range chickens have no restrictions) – you can also feed them from you table scraps – chickens love to eat almost anything that you eat (vegetable matter) – they will happily eat potatoes – they love tomatoes and bananas. Avoid Avocado pears and cabbage if you are raising laying chickens as it slows down egg production.
